What is Sucralfate?

Sucralfate is effective in the prevention and treatment of ulcers in the mouth, esophagous, stomach, and intestines. This includes prevention of those ulcers caused by aspirin or any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). Sucralfate requires a prescription from your veterinarian, and is sold per tablet.

Benefits:

  • Bandage and protects ulcers against further damage from acids and aids in healing
  • May help prevent ulcers from formin, which can happen when a pet is given aspirin or NSAIDs

Cautions:

Sucralfate should not be used in animals allergic to it. Use with caution in pregnant or nursing animals.

What happens if I miss giving a dose:

Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give your pet two doses at once.

Possible side effects of Sucralfate

Sucralfate may result in these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction (labored breathing, hives, etc.)
  • Constipation

Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that is unusual to your pet.

Storage:

Should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and light.

Directions:

Give this medication as directed by your veterinarian. Sucralfate should be given on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after, a meal. Crush the tablet for better absorption.
