What is Benazepril?

Benazepril is used to treat minor to severe heart failure, high blood pressure, or loss of protein in the kidney due to some kidney diseases. It lowers blood pressure, lowers the stress on the heart, and reduces fluid build-up in the lungs. It is often given along with Furosemide or Digoxin. Benazepril requires a prescription from your veterinarian, and is sold per tablet.

Cautions:

Benazepril should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug. Do not stop giving this medication without your veterinarian's approval. A missed dose can result in a sudden rise in blood pressure. Tell your veterinarian if your pet has liver disease, kidney disease, or blood disorders. Tell your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant or nursing.

What happens if I miss giving a dose:

Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give your pet two doses at once.

Possible side effects of Benazepril:

  • Side effects include changes in urination, decreased appetite, vomiting, sudden lethargy or weakness. These symptoms should be reported to your veterinarian.
  • Side effects are more likely when benazepril is administered with other potent drugs, such as diuretics or vasodilators.
  • If a pet collapses while receiving benazepril, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Storage:

Store in a tightly sealed container at room temperature, away from excess moisture or heat.

Directions:

Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. Benazepril can be given with or without food. Do not abruptly stop giving benazepril.
