What is Ciprofloxacin?

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat difficult bacterial infections in pets. It is effective against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterias. It is commonly used for urinary tract infection, skin infections and respiratory infections. Ciprofloxacin requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

Cautions:

Ciprofloxacin should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug. Young animals treated with ciprofloxacin may develop damage to the cartilage of their joints. Swollen joints and lameness are clinical signs that may be observed. Ciprofloxacin should not be administered to puppies. Those between the ages of four and 28 weeks are the most susceptible. Ciprofloxacin may interact with other medications. Consult with your veterinarian to determine if other drugs your pet is receiving could interact with ciprofloxacin. Such drugs include theophylline, antacids, iron supplements, sucralfate, cyclosporine and various other antibiotics. Use caution when administering this drug to pets with kidney disease, liver disease, central nervous system disorders, or epilepsy. Tell your veterinarian if your pet pregnant or lactating.

What happens if I miss giving a dose:

Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give your pet two doses at once.

Side Effects of Ciprofloxacin:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Lethargy
  • Convulsions
  • Seizures in pets with CNS disorders
  • Cataracts if given long-term

Storage:

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Directions:

Give this medication as directed by your veterinarian. The duration of administration depends on the condition being treated, response to the medication and the development of any adverse effects. Make sure to complete the prescription unless specifically directed by your veterinarian. Even if your pet feels better, the entire treatment plan should be completed to prevent relapse or prevent the development of resistance. Ciprofloxacin can be given with or without food, but should be given at the same time every day. Have plenty of water available for your pet to drink.
