What is Mupirocin Ointment?

Mupirocin is an antibiotic ointment is indicated for the topical treatment of canine bacterial infections of the skin, including superficial pyoderma, caused by susceptible strains of bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus intermedius. Mupirocin requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

Cautions:

This drug is contraindicated in animals with a history of sensitivity reactions to any of its components. Mupirocin ointment should not be used for more than 30 days. Safety of use in pregnant or breeding animals has not been determined. Mupirocin ointment is not for ophthalmic use. Because of the potential hazard of nephrotoxicity due to the polyethylene glycol content of the product base, care should be exercised when using this product in treating extensive deep lesions where absorption of large quantities of polyethylene glycol is possible.

What happens if I miss a dose:

Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give your pet two doses at once.

Side effects of Mupirocin Ointment:

No side effects have been reported with this product. If a skin reaction such as irritation occurs, treatment should be discontinued and contact your veterinarian for proper therapy.

Storage:

Store this product at room temperature.

Directions:

Prior to treatment, the lesion should be cleaned. Mupirocin ointment should be applied to the affected area twice a day. Apply a sufficient amount of ointment to completely cover the infected area. Maximum duration of treatment should not exceed 30 days. Avoid getting this medication in the pet's eyes, nose, or mouth.
